What it does
Your deferred tax position worked out line by line, with a view on whether the asset will ever be used. Give it carrying amounts and tax bases and you get the temporary differences, the deferred tax asset or liability, and a rate reconciliation. For each balance sheet item it subtracts the tax base from the carrying amount. Higher book value on an asset means a liability, and the reverse an asset. It uses the enacted rate for when the difference reverses. Then it tests whether a deferred tax asset is recoverable, looking at unused losses, expiry and local carry-forward rules. It follows IAS 12 and ASC 740 and explains why the tax charge differs from the headline rate.
You give it
- Balance sheet with carrying amounts
- Tax bases from your tax computation
- Enacted tax rates
- Unused losses and credits with expiry (optional)
- Country or tax rules
You get
- Temporary differences table
- Deferred tax asset and liability
- Recoverability assessment
- Tax rate reconciliation
Use it when
- Capital allowances run ahead of depreciation and you need the liability.
- You have tax losses and must decide whether to book an asset.
- Auditors ask for a reconciliation of the effective tax rate.
- Tax rates change and you must restate deferred balances.
