What you get
What goes in
- Your tables with key columns and row counts, if known
- Your relationships, with type and filter direction
- Storage mode of each table and your refresh schedule
- Who uses the model and what it must answer
- Your access rules and known problems (optional)
What comes out
- Model summary: Purpose, users, fact tables and their grain, dimension tables, and whether the layout is a star.
- Ranked findings: Each issue with priority, the evidence you gave, the risk and the fix.
- Test and undo steps: A check to run before each change and a way to roll it back.
- Missing facts: Anything the review could not judge because you did not supply it.
- Roadmap: Fixes grouped as quick wins, short term and long term.

Every run hands it back in this order. Your details fill each gap.
MODEL <name, purpose, users, size facts given>
SHAPE <fact tables and grain, dimension tables, star or snowflake>
FINDINGS 1. <High / Medium / Low> <issue>
Evidence: <what you showed>
Risk: <wrong numbers, slow refresh, hard to maintain>

Is it for you?
Use it when
- A report shows totals that do not match the source, and you suspect the links between tables.
- You inherited a model from someone else and want a second opinion before you build on it.
- Refresh is getting slow or the file keeps growing, and you want to know what to trim.
Skip it when
- One report page is slow and you do not know why. Use the Power BI report speed checker.
- You need to plan charts, filters and pages. Use the Power BI report layout planner.
- You want one measure or formula written or fixed. This reviews the whole model, not a single measure.
- You want a new model built from scratch. This reviews one that already exists.

What it does
A Power BI data model review checks the shape of the model behind your reports. Slow refreshes, wrong totals and confusing filters often start there, not in the charts. The skill looks at four things in order. First, whether the tables follow a star layout: facts in the middle, descriptive tables around them. Second, whether each link between tables has the right type and filter direction. Third, whether each table uses the right storage mode. Fourth, access rules, size and upkeep. It only judges what you show it. If it lacks a fact, it asks or marks it missing instead of guessing. Every fix comes with a test and a way to undo it.
What goes in and out
You give it
- A list of your tables with the key columns and row counts, if you know them
- Your relationships, with each table pair, type and filter direction
- The storage mode of each table, and your refresh schedule
- Who uses the model and what questions it must answer
- Your access rules and any known problems (optional)
- Image (optional)
You get
- A short summary of how the model is built
- Findings ranked by urgency, each with evidence and a fix
- A test to run before each change, and how to undo it
- A list of facts still missing
- A plan split into quick wins, short term and long term
Use it when
- A report shows totals that do not match the source, and you suspect the links between tables.
- You inherited a model from someone else and want a second opinion before you build on it.
- Refresh is getting slow or the file keeps growing, and you want to know what to trim.
- You are about to share the model with more people and want to check it and its access rules first.

How the task works
- Collect the facts. It asks for tables, links, storage modes, refresh, access rules and use, and marks gaps as missing.
- Check the shape. It checks each fact table's grain, the keys, and whether the layout is a clean star.
- Check the links. It reviews link type, filter direction, missing matches and any loops between tables.
- Check storage and size. It reviews Import, DirectQuery and Dual choices, big columns and refresh needs.
- Check access and upkeep. It looks at row security, naming, documentation and how changes get tested.
- Rank the fixes. It splits wrong-answer risks from tuning ideas and gives each fix a test and an undo step.
Full instructions
- Gather what you can. Use the Model view to list your tables and links. Add storage modes, row counts, refresh schedule and access rules. Screenshots or a pasted list both work. If you only have Power BI Service and cannot open the Model view, paste the table and relationship names from the model's lineage view or from the person who built it, and mark what you do not know.
- Paste the skill, then your notes. Add one line on who uses the model and what they need to answer.
- Ask your AI to list what it still needs before it reviews. Fill the gaps, or tell it to mark them as missing.
- Read the top findings first. Check each against your model, because your AI can only judge what you showed it.
- Make one change at a time. Run the test that comes with the fix, and keep the undo step.
- If a report is still slow after the fixes, run the Diagnose a slow Power BI report next.
Words used in this task
- Star layout: Fact tables of events or sales in the middle, linked to small descriptive tables around them.
- Grain: What one row in a table stands for, such as one order line.
- Storage mode: Whether a table is loaded into Power BI (Import) or read live from the source (DirectQuery).
- Row-level security: Rules that show each person only the rows they may see.

Power BI Data Model Design Review
You are a Power BI data modeling expert conducting comprehensive design reviews. Your role is to evaluate model architecture, identify optimization opportunities, and ensure adherence to best practices for scalable, maintainable, and performant data models.
Before you start
Use the material below to do this job. If facts or tool access are missing, explain what you can finish and what must wait.
What you need (use your own material or the linked skill):
- The data model (yours): the database tables or collections, their fields and how they link.
Makes it better (optional):
- An image (yours): a finished picture.
How to start:
- Look first. Use what they've already attached, pasted or put in their about-me note. In a coding assistant with file access, look in the project too for these by name.
- Check what's missing. Look for the data model, an image. They can attach files, paste the details, or share a file path your assistant can read. Ask only for missing facts that change the result. If they ask you to start with what they have, complete the parts you can and mark the gaps.
- Do the job. Follow the skill below with the facts and tools you have. Mark each gap with
MISSING:where it belongs and never invent a fact to fill it.
How to run this review (AI Blocks notes)
You can only judge what the user shows you. You cannot open their file. Never invent table names, sizes, timings or speed gains.
Run in this order:
- Gather inputs. Ask once for: the table list with key columns and row counts, the relationships (tables, cardinality, filter direction), the storage mode of each table, the refresh schedule, who uses the model and what it must answer, and any row-level security rules. Accept pasted lists or screenshots. Mark each fact not given as
MISSING: <what>and say which findings it limits. - Check grain and keys. State what one row of each fact table means, whether keys are complete and whether the layout is a star.
- Check relationships and storage. Cardinality, filter direction, orphan keys, loops, many-to-many links, then Import, DirectQuery and Dual choices.
- Check security and upkeep. Row-level security, naming, descriptions and change testing.
- Rank the fixes. Separate risks to correct answers from tuning ideas. Use the Quick Assessment Checklist when little was given, and the Comprehensive one when the user gave full detail and asked for depth.
Hand back, in order: a model summary, ranked findings (priority, issue, evidence the user gave, risk, fix, a test to run first, how to undo it), missing facts, and a roadmap of quick wins, short term and long term. Skip the Review Output Structure parts that have no evidence behind them. For speed or DAX problems that need measured timings, point the user to the Diagnose a slow Power BI report item.
