What it does
A coaching session planned before you walk in: opening questions, a flow for the conversation and clear follow-up steps. It keeps the teacher doing the thinking, so the change is theirs and more likely to stick. The skill follows a partnership approach and the Impact Cycle. The coach asks, listens and lets the teacher choose the focus. The plan covers setting a goal, looking at evidence, picking one strategy and agreeing a small action with a date. It adjusts for the teacher's experience, mood and the relationship stage, for example an eager new teacher versus someone resistant. Prompts are open questions, not advice. It ends with a short note of what was agreed.
You give it
- The teacher's coaching focus
- Brief background on the teacher
- Observation notes (optional)
- Where you are in the coaching cycle (optional)
You get
- Opening and probing questions
- A conversation flow with timings
- Tips for the teacher's mood and stage
- Agreed follow-up actions
Use it when
- You coach a teacher and want a clear structure for the meeting.
- A teacher is defensive after an observation and you need a gentler route in.
- You find yourself talking more than listening in coaching.
- You want a good opening question for an overwhelmed new teacher.
- You need follow-up actions that are small and specific.
