Build an n8n automation that tells you when it breaks

Describe the task. Get an n8n workflow that retries, alerts you on failure and splits into reusable parts.

Build an n8n automation that reports failures and is reusable is a free AI workflow for the job "Connect AI to your tools". It guides your AI through several skills in order, passing each step's output to the next.

What it does

An n8n workflow that works in a test can fail in silence once it runs on its own. A step times out, a service returns an error and nobody hears until a customer asks where their order went. Long workflows are also hard to fix and impossible to reuse. The steps build in that order. First it picks a pattern and lays out the trigger, data, changes and output. Next it takes that workflow and adds retries for steps that fail now and then, error paths for risky steps, clear error replies and a catch-all workflow that alerts you. Last it splits the finished workflow into sub-workflows with typed inputs, a clear return and names an agent can find. Each sub-workflow keeps the error handling from step 2.

Steps

  1. n8n workflow designer: Describe the automation you want. Get an n8n workflow laid out with a proven pattern, from webhook to schedule.
  2. n8n failure handler: Give it an n8n workflow that breaks quietly. Get clear errors, retries and alerts so you see and fix failures.
  3. n8n sub-workflow builder: Give it a long n8n workflow. Get reusable sub-workflows with clear inputs that your agents can also call.

How to use it

  1. Download the handoff pack. It's a zip with HANDOFF.md and every skill file this workflow uses.
  2. Give the folder to Claude (in Claude Code, or as files in a Claude Project) and say "Follow HANDOFF.md".
  3. Build on a test copy in n8n. Do not point it at live data until the run is clean.
  4. Say where failure alerts should go, such as email or chat.
