Hire an AI debt interest and leverage checker

Share debt, interest terms, cash and sweep rules. Get cash interest, capitalized debt, payment limits and ending use checks.

What you give

  • The loan balance at the start of the year, the yearly cash and PIK rates, and the date PIK is added (from the loan agreement)
  • The share of the year the interest covers, or the start and end dates and the day count

What you get

  • Sweep owed, repayment made, the limit that set it and any sweep left unpaid
  • Ending net debt to earnings and signed headroom against the maximum
  • A made payment and a proposed payment, shown as separate cases
  • Missing facts and the checks that could not run

An example

The loan pays part of its interest in cash and adds part to the balance, and you need the cash cost for the year.

You ask: “Share debt, interest terms, cash and sweep rules. Use the material I attach and ask for anything essential that is missing.”

You get back:

  • Step 1 cash and PIK interest. Cash interest, PIK interest added, the new loan balance and total interest, tied back to the inputs.
  • Step 2 cash sweep. Sweep owed, repayment and the limit that set it, ending cash and debt, and any unpaid sweep.
  • Step 3 net debt to earnings. Net debt, the ratio against the maximum and signed headroom, with made and proposed cases apart.

An example, not your task.

Details

Everything it can hand back

Your task sets the actual outputs. The specialist picks the methods that cover them.

  • Cash interest, PIK interest added, the new loan balance and total interest
  • Sweep owed, repayment made, the limit that set it and any sweep left unpaid
  • Ending net debt to earnings and signed headroom against the maximum
  • A made payment and a proposed payment, shown as separate cases
  • Missing facts and the checks that could not run

How it does the job well

  • Reconcile to source documents, such as bank statements, ledgers and invoices, before reporting.
  • Show the calculation, inputs and period for every figure.
  • Label actuals, estimates and forecasts clearly.
  • Send tax, legal and regulatory questions to a qualified professional.

Mistakes it avoids

  • Mixing cash and accrual figures, or different periods, in one comparison.
  • Rounding or formula errors that do not tie back to totals.
  • Giving personal investment advice.

What a good result looks like

An example, not your task: The loan pays part of its interest in cash and adds part to the balance, and you need the cash cost for the year.

  • Sources and assumptions. Each input with its source, date, currency and scale.
  • MISSING and CHECKS MISSED. Every gap and the line it stops, and every check that failed or could not run.

How the work is checked

  • Ending PIK is added once, cash interest is paid once and ECF is never added again to cash already generated.
  • Actual and proposed cases are shown apart, and a covenant is never marked met by an unexecuted prepayment.
  • Trace each material input to its source, date, currency, scale, sign and reporting period. Retain unresolved MISSING: lines.
  • Reconcile opening balances, additions, deductions and closing balances.
  • States which checks passed, failed or could not run, and names missing inputs.

These checks have not been run against a model yet. Your AI uses them to check its own work.

Capabilities

  • Cash and PIK interest checker. Applies the cash rate and the PIK rate to the opening balance for the same slice of the year. Only the PIK part is added to the balance. Hands step 2 the cash interest and the ending principal.
  • Debt cash sweep checker. Takes your cash after cash interest and the certified excess cash flow. Sweep owed is excess cash flow times the sweep share. Repayment is the smallest of sweep owed, cash above the minimum and eligible debt. Hands step 3 the ending cash and debt.
  • Net leverage covenant checker. Takes the debt after the sweep and the cash that counts at the same date. It nets only the lesser of eligible cash and the cash cap, then compares net debt with the maximum ratio times EBITDA. A proposed repayment is shown as its own case.

Inputs and helpful context

The specialist starts from the task brief. Only active methods require their inputs.

For the primary method, when used

  • The loan balance at the start of the year, the yearly cash and PIK rates, and the date PIK is added (from the loan agreement)
  • The share of the year the interest covers, or the start and end dates and the day count
  • Your cash before interest, the minimum cash the loan lets you hold, and the debt that can be repaid early (from your accounts and the agreement)
  • The certified excess cash flow and the sweep clause (from the compliance certificate and the agreement)
  • The covenant wording: included debt, the cash cap, EBITDA and the maximum ratio, plus the currency, scale and test date

Helpful context (optional)

  • The loan agreement's interest, sweep and covenant clauses, not a summary of them.
  • Your own loan spreadsheet, so the AI can keep your layout.
  • A named reviewer who knows the loan.

Tools and access

  • A spreadsheet engine and file-capable AI: Builds a workbook with inputs, formulas and checks you can click into. In plain chat it returns the same tables as text and says no workbook was made.
  • Your compliance certificate: It holds the lender-confirmed excess cash flow, which the AI must use as given and never rebuild.
  • Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini: Any of them can do these sums in a chat.
  • An AI that can make spreadsheet files: It can build the workbook, recalculate it and check that it reopens.
  • Node.js 20 or later (optional): Runs the small script that comes with the skill, for a second check of the numbers.
  • Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini: Any of them can do these sums in a chat and show each step.

    • One me.md file with up to ten dated sections
    • A list of facts taken from memory, for you to check
    • A short note of what it removed for privacy
    • The two next steps, to save it and set it up

Tasks you can use it for

  • The loan pays part of its interest in cash and adds part to the balance, and you need the cash cost for the year.
  • The lender's compliance certificate shows excess cash flow and you need to know how much must repay debt.
  • You want to know if the net debt to earnings test still passes after interest and the sweep.
  • A reviewer asks you to trace every figure back to the loan agreement.

Limits to check before starting

  • The loan has no PIK interest and no cash sweep. Use the covenant checker for net debt to earnings on its own.
  • You want to cure a breach with an EBITDA addback or an equity cure. Use the workflow for covenant headroom and cure.
  • You want a multi-year debt schedule or buyout returns. This covers one year of one loan.
  • The borrower can choose cash or PIK each period. Step 1 stops on that case, so a person who knows the loan has to set the split.

Best way to use this role

Give it one clear outcome, the actual files and a definition of done. Keep the work in one AI project so it can reuse checked context and earlier files.

  • Download the workflow pack and give it to an AI that can read files, such as Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini. Pick one that can make spreadsheets if you want a workbook.
  • Attach the loan agreement pages on interest, the sweep and the covenant, plus the latest compliance certificate. Paste your cash figures. Say the currency, the scale and the test date.
  • After step 1, check that cash interest plus PIK interest equals total interest, and that the new balance is the old balance plus PIK only.
  • After step 2, check the repayment is the smallest of the three limits and the AI names which one. Any shortfall must show as unpaid, not waived.
  • After step 3, check the made and proposed cases are apart. Then fill every MISSING line before anyone relies on the result. Nothing here pays, sends or files anything.
