Hire an AI long-term growth and reinvestment reviewer

Check that long-term growth is paid for by reinvestment when a forecast changes. Get the corrected terminal value and the gap against your limit.

What you give

  • The model you accepted last time, as a spreadsheet, and last time's review record (optional on a first run)
  • Your first stable-year NOPAT, growth rate, return on new capital and WACC, each with the source and date
  • The change size that counts as material, such as "5% of terminal value" (your own rule)

What you get

  • A change log of every assumption that moved since last time, with its source
  • The investment the growth needs at the supported return, set beside what the model spends
  • A separate fade case, only when a source says excess returns end sooner
  • A challenge list, MISSING lines, CHECKS MISSED and a short record for the next review

An example

A new annual report or investor update lifts the growth forecast, and you want to see whether the investment line moved with it.

You ask: “Check that long-term growth is paid for by reinvestment when a forecast changes. Use the material I attach and ask for anything essential that is missing.”

You get back:

  • Changed since last review. Every assumption that moved since last time, old to new, with its source and date.
  • Funding check. The reinvestment the growth needs at the supported return, set beside what the model spends, and the shortfall.
  • Implied return. The return on new capital hidden inside the model's terminal value, and whether your sources support it.

An example, not your task.

Details

Everything it can hand back

Your task sets the actual outputs. The specialist picks the methods that cover them.

  • A change log of every assumption that moved since last time, with its source
  • The investment the growth needs at the supported return, set beside what the model spends
  • The return on new capital hidden inside the model's terminal value, and whether it is believable
  • A corrected terminal value where growth is paid for, and the gap in value, as a figure and a percentage
  • A separate fade case, only when a source says excess returns end sooner
  • A challenge list, MISSING lines, CHECKS MISSED and a short record for the next review

How it does the job well

  • Read the existing code, its conventions and its tests before changing anything. Match the project's patterns.
  • Make the smallest change that fully solves the request. Keep unrelated refactors out.
  • Reproduce a bug before fixing it, and add a test that fails without the fix.
  • Treat input from users, files and networks as untrusted. Validate it at the boundary.

Mistakes it avoids

  • Claiming code works without running it or its tests.
  • Inventing APIs, package versions or settings instead of checking the installed ones.
  • Changing behaviour outside the request, such as reformatting whole files or renaming public interfaces.

What a good result looks like

An example, not your task: A new annual report or investor update lifts the growth forecast, and you want to see whether the investment line moved with it.

  • Funded case. A corrected terminal value where growth is paid for, the gap against the model, and whether it is inside your limit.
  • Fade case. A separate case where excess returns end sooner. It appears only when a dated source asks for it, otherwise it says why it was skipped.
  • Challenges. One question per line for the analyst, such as what supports a return the sources do not.

How the work is checked

  • Growth, return and reinvestment tie: growth equals reinvestment rate times return on new capital.
  • WACC and the cash flows use the same currency and basis, and WACC is above growth.
  • The funded terminal value reconstructs from its own FCFF.
  • An impossible implied return is rejected, not interpreted.
  • States which checks passed, failed or could not run, and names missing inputs.

These checks have not been run against a model yet. Your AI uses them to check its own work.

A second opinion

Before it hands back, your AI reviews the draft the way Benjamin Graham and Charlie Munger would. This is a way of reviewing the work. It does not mean they wrote or endorse it.

Capabilities

  • Compares with the last review. Reads the saved record if it belongs to this company and currency, or sets a first baseline. Lists each assumption that moved. If nothing changed and no review is due, it says so and stops.
  • Checks the inputs match. Confirms one currency, one inflation basis and one discount rate that fits the cash flows. Stops a line when a source or date is missing, and sends banks and insurers elsewhere.
  • Links growth to reinvestment. Works out the investment needed as growth divided by the return on new capital. Takes it off NOPAT to get free cash flow, then divides by WACC less growth to get terminal value. Needs WACC to be above growth.
  • Backs out what the model assumes. Starts from the model's terminal value and works backwards to its cash flow, its investment and the return on new capital it needs. It rejects a case with no investment or more than all of NOPAT, because growth cannot be read from it.
  • Builds a fade case only if a source asks. When a dated source shortens the period of excess returns, it builds a separate case that charges capital each year and adds the discounted profit above that charge to capital. When capital changes, it expands the schedule.
  • Sizes the gap and saves the record. Compares the gap in value with your materiality rule, lists the challenges and MISSING lines, and writes the small record for next time. It keeps the old record.

How the role works

  1. Checks your task, context and available tools.
  2. Picks the methods needed and prepares a work plan.
  3. Carries out supported tasks, with each method's limits and review gates.
  4. Checks the real deliverables and corrects supported faults.
  5. Hands back files, evidence and unresolved gaps.

Your specialist's working setup

Inputs and helpful context

The specialist starts from the task brief. Only active methods require their inputs.

For the primary method, when used

  • The model you accepted last time, as a spreadsheet, and last time's review record (optional on a first run)
  • The new forecast, filing or analyst note, each with its date (from the annual report, the investor pack or your own notes)
  • Your first stable-year NOPAT, growth rate, return on new capital and WACC, each with the source and date
  • The change size that counts as material, such as "5% of terminal value" (your own rule)
  • Any dated source that says the company's edge will last a shorter or longer time (optional)
  • The valuation date, the currency and the scale, such as millions

Helpful context (optional)

  • The accepted model file with its date, not a copy edited afterwards.
  • The note or filing that explains why the forecast changed.
  • A named person who owns the valuation and will check the sources.

Tools and access

  • A spreadsheet engine and file-capable AI: Builds a workbook with inputs and formulas you can click into, and can save the record file. In plain chat it returns the same tables as text.
  • Your filing or analyst note: Gives the growth and return figures a date and a source, so each assumption can be traced.
  • A spreadsheet engine and file-capable AI: Builds, recalculates and reopens a linked workbook. In plain chat you get the same tables as text.
  • A spreadsheet engine and file-capable AI: Create, recalculate, render and reopen the requested native workbook.
  • Node.js 20 or later: Run the bundled dependency-free reference calculation against explicit numeric inputs.

Tasks you can use it for

  • A new annual report or investor update lifts the growth forecast, and you want to see whether the investment line moved with it.
  • Your analyst raised the long-term growth rate from 3% to 4% and the terminal value jumped. You want to know if that jump is paid for.
  • A note says a rival is entering the market, and you want to see what a shorter period of excess returns does to value.
  • You review the same holding every quarter and want each change checked against the last accepted model.

Limits to check before starting

  • You want a price target, a buy or sell view or advice on a trade. It reviews assumptions and nothing else.
  • The company is a bank or an insurer. Its growth is paid for with equity and regulatory capital, so this cash-flow method does not fit.
  • You have no dated sources for growth, return or discount rate. It will mark each gap MISSING and stop those lines, but it cannot judge numbers that have no source.
  • You only want to check one number, such as the implied return. Use the Terminal growth reinvestment checker.
  • You want to build the whole growth and reinvestment spreadsheet from scratch. Use the Growth and reinvestment spreadsheet modeller workflow.

Best way to use this role

Give it one clear outcome, the actual files and a definition of done. Keep the work in one AI project so it can reuse checked context and earlier files.

  • Download the pack and give it to an AI that can read files, such as Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini. In a chat-only tool it still works, but cannot save files. At the end of each run, copy the RECORD FOR NEXT REVIEW lines (forecast version, NOPAT, growth, return on new capital, WACC, reinvestment rate, terminal value and your materiality rule) into a note, and paste them in next time. If the Link operating growth to terminal reinvestment workflow is missing from the pack, it uses the formulas in its own steps and says so.
  • Say if this is the first run. If not, paste last time's record. Then attach the accepted model, the new forecast or filing, and your growth, return, WACC and materiality figures with their sources.
  • Read "changed since last review" first. Check each moved number against its source before you read the rest.
  • Look at the funding check. The investment needed should equal growth divided by return on new capital. Try it by hand on one line.
  • Fill every MISSING line, then run it again. Treat the challenge list as questions for the analyst, not as an answer.
