Hire an AI Unreal world designer
Give it your world size, platform and what fills the world. You get a world plan, a budget for each part and a performance check list.
What you give
- World size, such as kilometres by kilometres, and how fast the player moves
- Your Unreal Engine 5 version, platforms and frame rate target
- What fills the world: terrain types, props, characters and effects
What you get
- A World Partition plan with grids, cell sizes, loading range and data layers
- A landscape plan with layer count, a size check and the virtual texture choice
- A HLOD plan with when to rebuild it and how to check it by eye
- A PCG plan with keep-out zones, and whether to bake it
An example
You are starting an open-world level and need the grid and layers planned first.
You ask: “Give it your world size, platform and what fills the world. Use the material I attach and ask for anything essential that is missing.”
You get back:
- World Partition plan. Grids with cell size and loading range, data layers and the Always Loaded list.
- Landscape plan. Size check, layers per region, virtual texture choice and how to handle holes.
- HLOD plan. Method, draw distance, what is included, when to rebuild and how to check by eye.
An example, not your task.

Details
Everything it can hand back
Your task sets the actual outputs. The specialist picks the methods that cover them.
- A World Partition plan with grids, cell sizes, loading range and data layers
- A landscape plan with layer count, a size check and the virtual texture choice
- A HLOD plan with when to rebuild it and how to check it by eye
- A PCG plan with keep-out zones, and whether to bake it
- A performance check list for streaming, frame time and memory
How it does the job well
- You cannot open Unreal or profile a build. Say Not run for any check you could not do. Never say a check passed when you did not run it.
- The profile's cell sizes (for example 64m for dense urban, 128m for open terrain, 256m or more for sparse areas), layer limits and instance limits are starting values. Label each "starting value, check the Epic docs for your engine version". Epic changes these settings between versions.
- Plans and settings are for the user to apply. Do not claim anything was set, built or measured.
- Decide the grid and the Always Loaded list before content is added. Changing the grid later means re-saving the level, so say so up front.
- Keep single materials, Niagara effects and gameplay code out of scope. Point to the Unreal Technical Artist agent or the Unreal Systems Engineer agent.
- Start from the user's task and the content, then the layout. Decoration comes last.
- Design every state: empty, loading, error, long text and mobile.
Mistakes it avoids
- Placing quest triggers or key characters on a cell boundary.
- Hand-placing thousands of trees with the foliage tool.
- Giving a cell size or limit as a rule for the user's project when it is a starting value.
- Designing only the happy path at desktop width.
- Copying a reference's logo, text or claims instead of learning from its structure.
- Handing over a picture without the sizes, tokens and behaviour a developer needs.
What a good result looks like
An example, not your task: You are starting an open-world level and need the grid and layers planned first.
- PCG population plan. Steps, keep-out zones and whether each area is baked ahead or runs at play time.
- Performance check list. Streaming, frame time, instance count and memory checks, each with how to measure it.
- Risks and open questions. Large world coordinates, team editing and anything the AI could not confirm.
How the work is checked
- Every screen has its states, breakpoints and interactions written down.
- Colour pairs and type sizes pass the stated contrast checks.
- The handoff names components, tokens and open questions.
- States which checks passed, failed or could not run, and names missing inputs.
These checks have not been run against a model yet. Your AI uses them to check its own work.
A second opinion
Before it hands back, your AI reviews the draft the way Massimo Vignelli and Steve Krug would. This is a way of reviewing the work. It does not mean they wrote or endorse it.
Capabilities
- Fix the world brief. It confirms size, platform, frame rate target, player speed and engine version. Gaps are asked once, then marked MISSING.
- Plan the grid. It picks cell sizes and loading ranges per content type, and lists what must always be loaded.
- Plan the landscape. It checks the size rule, limits layers per region and says when to use runtime virtual textures.
- Plan the population. A PCG graph with keep-out zones. Large areas are baked ahead. Small zones can run at play time.
- Plan HLOD. Distant geometry gets generated HLOD meshes, with a rebuild rule and a visual check from far away.
- Write the check list. Streaming hitches, frame time, instance counts and memory, each with how to measure it.
How the role works
- Checks your task, context and available tools.
- Picks the methods needed and prepares a work plan.
- Carries out supported tasks, with each method's limits and review gates.
- Checks the real deliverables and corrects supported faults.
- Hands back files, evidence and unresolved gaps.
Your specialist's working setup
Download the base specialist without a task form or account. README.md and SETUP.md explain how to use the folder. SOUL.md defines its scope. INTAKE.md asks missing questions inside your AI. PLAYBOOK.md, SKILLS.md, BEST_PRACTICES.md, CHECKS.md and HANDOFF.md guide the work and its checked deliverables.
Complete associated skills, supporting files and licences are included. Choose only the methods needed for the actual task. Keep context, working files and accepted feedback in your AI project.
Use this specialist through MCP or the API
Call prepare_specialist with role_id unreal-world-builder only. No task is required to load it. Your AI asks what job you need done, what you want back and which relevant context it can use.
For task-led hiring, call find_specialist, explain the suggested specialists and let the user accept or change the team.

Inputs and helpful context
The specialist starts from the task brief. Only active methods require their inputs.
For the primary method, when used
- World size, such as kilometres by kilometres, and how fast the player moves
- Your Unreal Engine 5 version, platforms and frame rate target
- What fills the world: terrain types, props, characters and effects
- Your zone or biome layout, in words or as a map sketch
- Your current World Partition setup or a profiler result (optional)
Helpful context (optional)
- A map sketch with zones and towns marked
- An Unreal Insights capture of a traversal run
- Your fastest player move speed, including vehicles
Tools and access
- Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini: Any chat AI can plan the grid and tables. Pick one that can read a map sketch or profiler screenshot.

- Your problem worked on the way Steve Krug would: their questions, their method, their push-back
- The answer or the work, in Steve Krug's voice, using their ideas by name
- Anything that goes beyond their public record, marked

Tasks you can use it for
- You are starting an open-world level and need the grid and layers planned first.
- Players see hitches or empty spots while running through the map.
- Far-away objects pop in, and you want to know if HLOD is the cause.
- You need to fill a large area with trees or rocks without placing them by hand.
Limits to check before starting
- You need one material or Niagara effect planned. Use the Unreal technical artist.
- You need gameplay code or systems. Use the Unreal gameplay systems engineer.
- You need the fights and pacing of one level. Use the Game level designer.
Best way to use this role
Give it one clear outcome, the actual files and a definition of done. Keep the work in one AI project so it can reuse checked context and earlier files.
- Download the pack and add it to your AI as a skill. If you cannot, paste SKILL.md, then references/source-agent.md, then your brief into a new chat. Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini all work.
- Paste your world size, platform, engine version and player speed first. Then add what fills the world.
- Say "Plan the world. Mark any number you cannot tie to my platform." Answer its one round of questions.
- Read the grid and data layer tables first. Settle the Always Loaded list before anyone adds content.
- Build in Unreal in the order given: landscape, population, HLOD, then profiling.
- Run the performance check list on your build. Paste the results back and ask for the top fixes.
