What it does
The first conversation is the hardest to get. Messages that ask to "interview" someone, ask for their "opinion" or ask for "a coffee sometime" get ignored, because they sound like work, like a pitch, or like a waste of time. This skill follows Rob Fitzpatrick's advice. It first looks for a casual route, such as a chat at an event, which needs no request at all. When a meeting is needed, it writes the request in five parts: your mission, where you are and that you're not selling, the exact thing you're stuck on, why this person can help, and a clear ask. It writes the cold version, the version for a friend to forward, and the opening lines for the meeting. It never mentions your idea.
You give it
- Who you want to talk to and what you're trying to learn
- How you could reach them, such as people you know, events, places, a blog or none yet
- What you are stuck on, in a line
- What stage you're at and whether you have anything to sell (optional)
- A shortlist (optional)
You get
- The easiest route to a first conversation, casual before formal
- A message in the five-part shape for a warm intro, a cold approach or a friend to forward
- An opening for the meeting that keeps you in charge
- A list of wording to avoid
Use it when
- You know who you want to talk to but can't get a first meeting.
- A friend offered an introduction and you need to make it easy to forward.
- You're about to message strangers and your draft sounds like a sales pitch.
How to use it
- Start a chat with the skill. Open it if you added it to your AI, or copy it and paste it in.
- Say who you want to talk to and what you are stuck on. Mention anyone who might introduce you.
- Choose the route it suggests. Try the casual one first if you can.
- Edit the message so it sounds like you, but keep the five parts.
- Send it to the first two or three people. Don't wait for a perfect message.
