What it does
A reasoned set of choices for how your app stores, copies, splits and protects its data, with the trade-off behind each. It is based on the ideas in the book Designing Data-Intensive Applications. You describe what you store, how it is read and written, and what must never go wrong. The skill covers seven areas: data models, storage engines, copies across servers, splitting data across machines, transactions and isolation, derived data such as caches and search, and failure handling. It scores your design from 1 to 10 using seven yes or no checks, shows which failed, such as unknown isolation level or an untested failover, and lists what to fix to reach 10.
You give it
- What your app stores
- Read and write patterns
- Consistency and uptime needs
- Your current design (optional)
You get
- Recommended storage and replication
- Splitting and consistency choices
- Score out of 10 with failed checks
- Fix list to improve
Use it when
- You are choosing between SQL and NoSQL for a new product.
- You worry about replication lag or hot spots in your database.
- You want a review of a data design before it ships.
- You need to explain data trade-offs to teammates.
How to use it
- Add it to your AI once: download it and add the folder to Claude, ChatGPT or Codex as a skill.
- Ask for the job in your own words. Your AI opens the skill when it fits.
