What it does
Products grow by adding. Each feature seems small, and soon nobody can say what the product is for. The same happens to services, courses and web pages: every section has a reason, and the whole has none. This skill starts by stating the one job the product does for the user and who would want to own the result. It lists every part, feature and step, and asks whether each helps that job, helps people understand it, or whether another part already does the work. It removes decoration and anything that exists only to impress. What remains is arranged in an order that shows how to use it, and checked for consistency of size, colour and wording. You get a plan with the cuts and their reasons.
You give it
- Your list of features, parts or steps
- The main job users hire the product for
- The report from "Design ten-principles reviewer" (optional if you have another review)
- Product facts such as usage data (optional)
- Brand brain (optional)
You get
- A keep, cut or merge decision for every part, with a reason
- The order the remaining parts should take
- A consistency check on size, colour and wording
- A dated plan, with the order to make the changes
Use it when
- Your product has more features than users can name.
- A review found parts that serve no purpose and you need a plan.
- You are planning a simpler next version.
How to use it
- Start a chat with the skill. Open it if you added it to your AI, or copy it and paste it in.
- Paste your feature list and the main job. If you ran the reviewer, paste its report too.
- Add anything that cannot be cut, such as legal needs or promises to customers.
- Read each cut and its reason. Overrule any you disagree with.
- Follow the plan in order and test with a user after each stage.
Workflows that use it
- Design the experience, name and measures around your customer's job
- Review a product against ten principles, then cut extras
