What it does
A salary hides costs. Health cover, a pension, a desk, software and a steady payday all come with it. Leave and you pay for each one yourself, and tax is not taken off before the money reaches you. Many people compare their old pay with their hoped-for income and miss all of that. This skill builds the number from the other end. It starts with a quiet-life month, adds what the employer was covering, adds a tax share, and gives you a gross floor. It then sorts every way you could earn into steady (repeats monthly and has been known for three months or more) and extra (one-off, seasonal, hoped for). Only steady income counts toward the floor, and streams with no contract are counted at four fifths of their usual size, since clients pause. The gap is turned into a number of clients. The report ends by asking what…
You give it
- What you spend in a lean month and in a comfortable one
- What your job covers that you would pay for yourself: health cover, pension, equipment, space
- Every way you could earn: the amount, how regular, whether there is a contract, how fast it is paid
- Your tax rate or a rough figure (optional)
- What you would charge a new client (optional)
You get
- Your monthly floor, in the lean and the comfortable version
- Each income stream sorted steady or extra, with the amount counted
- The gap, and how many clients it takes to close it
- The hole in a month you cannot work, and the cash to cover it
- A list of what is missing
Use it when
- You are thinking of leaving a job to work for yourself and need to know if the sums hold.
- You already freelance and your income swings so much you cannot plan.
- Someone asks how many clients you need and you only have a guess.
How to use it
- Start a chat with the skill. Open it if you added it to your AI, or copy it and paste it in.
- Paste your numbers as they are, with gaps. It marks what it cannot work out.
- Check the steady and extra sort. Move a stream if you know better.
- Take the report to the Client fee and cap setter.
