What it does
Many sites lose search traffic to small, boring faults. Dozens of pages carry the same title, so search engines cannot tell them apart. There is no sitemap to list the pages. Visitors who land on a missing page hit a dead end and leave. This skill lists page titles and descriptions and flags the repeats, especially on tag, category and paged pages. It checks that an XML sitemap exists and is submitted, and reads how many pages get indexed. It collects 404 errors, decides where each should go, and turns the 404 page into a helpful one. It ranks fixes by the number of pages affected. The advice is from 2013 and you must check it against current search guidance.
You give it
- Your site address
- A list of pages with titles and descriptions (or an export from your site)
- Your list of 404 errors and search traffic by page (optional)
- Whether you use a plugin or a hosted platform (optional)
- Your results (optional)
You get
- Duplicate titles and descriptions grouped by pattern
- Whether a sitemap exists, is submitted and how many pages are indexed
- Each 404 with a suggested destination
- A score out of 100 and a fix list ranked by pages affected
Use it when
- Your site has grown by adding tags, categories or paged lists.
- Some pages get no search traffic and you do not know why.
- Visitors land on error pages from old links.
