Tech debt tracker
Point it at your code. Get debt found, scored by severity and ordered into a clean-up plan.
Tech debt tracker is a free AI skill for the job "Build and ship software". Give the instructions to an AI assistant that supports the required files and tools, then review its output.

What it does
A scan of your codebase that finds debt, scores each item by how serious it is, and orders them into a clean-up plan you can track over time. It gives you a number for something that usually stays a feeling. Three parts work together. A scanner finds signals such as TODO notes, duplicated code, large files, missing tests and old dependencies, and writes a JSON inventory. A prioritiser reads that inventory and ranks items by cost of delay against effort. A dashboard compares dated snapshots, so you can see whether debt is rising or falling and report that to leaders. The scripts need Python and run on a folder you point them at.
You give it
- The path to your codebase
- Python to run the scripts
- Earlier scan results for trends (optional)
- Your team's capacity for clean-up (optional)
You get
- A debt inventory with severity scores
- A prioritised clean-up order
- Summary counts by type
- A trend dashboard over time
Use it when
- You want a first count of the debt in a project you do not know.
- You need a trend line to show debt is growing or shrinking.
- You must report engineering health to non-technical leaders.
- You want to pick this quarter's clean-up from a scored list.
- Your TODO comments are scattered and nobody tracks them.
How to use it
- Add it to your AI once: download it and add the folder to Claude, ChatGPT or Codex as a skill.
- Ask for the job in your own words. Your AI opens the skill when it fits.
- It works best when your AI can run code and read your project files.
