What it does
Safe ideas come from asking what everyone else does. Fresh ones often come from crossing two things that do not usually meet, such as a legal firm and a comic strip, or a bakery and a field recording. Most pairings fail, so you need many. This skill starts with who the work is for, and drops any answer that is only the crowd. It takes the styles you admire and writes at least ten what-if pairings, keeping the failures in view. It sets one hard limit, such as one colour family or one voice. It lets one accident in by moving a strong idea to a new order or format. It asks of each survivor whether it feels safe and pushes it further if so. You get a short list that holds together.
