What it does
A blank brief ("make something that expresses us") sounds generous and produces weak work. The designer has nothing to push against, so they reach for what they did last time. Briefs that name the audience, the need and a few hard limits give a designer something to work with. This skill pulls out the core facts: what, why, when and where. It picks the one idea the work must carry, one that can be got in a glance. It sets three to five limits, such as a size, a grid, two colours, one typeface or a deadline, and names what is left free on purpose. It adds a collecting step, so the designer starts from ten things that catch the eye.
You give it
- A few lines on the job: what it is for, when and where
- Who it is for and what they should do or see differently
- Limits you already know, such as budget or size (optional)
- Your brand file (optional)
- Brand brain (optional)
You get
- Core facts: what, why, when and where
- The one idea the work must carry, in a sentence
- Three to five firm limits and what is left free
- A collecting step and a plain statement of the need
Use it when
- You are about to brief a designer, a printer or an AI tool and have only a general wish.
- Past projects came back off-target because the brief was too loose.
- You want a one-page brief that a new person can follow.
How to use it
