What it does
Most feature request replies are a slow no dressed as a maybe. "Great idea, I've passed it to the team" costs nothing to write and leaves the customer waiting for something that will never come. When they work it out, they trust you less than if you had said no on day one. This prompt follows the way Jason Fried talks about saying no in public. It names the need under the request, because the feature is the customer's guess at a fix. It opens the reply with the no, gives the real reason you supplied in plain words, offers a way to get close today only if one exists, and thanks them for the detail they gave. It will not write "maybe later" unless you said it is true, and if your reason looks weak it tells you before writing.
You give it
- The customer's request as written
- Your decision and the real reason
- A way to get close today, if one exists (advised)
- What your product is for (optional)
You get
- The need under the request
- A reply under 120 words that opens with the no
- A note if the no looks wrong, and lines not to say
Use it when
- A customer asks for a feature that would make the product worse for everyone else.
- You have twenty requests in the queue and have been avoiding the honest ones.
- You keep writing 'passed to the team' and the team has never heard of it.
How to use it
- Copy the prompt, then paste it into Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini with the request under it.
- Write the real reason, even if it is uncomfortable.
- Read OWNER NOTE. If it questions the no, decide again before sending.
- Send the reply as is. Do not add a maybe.
