What it does
When someone makes you a bad offer, "no" starts a fight and "yes" costs you. The third option, which Chris Voss explains in public, is to ask them how. "How am I supposed to deliver that in two weeks with the team I have?" puts your problem on their desk, and people work on problems they are asked to solve. This prompt reads the demand and guesses what the other side really needs. It writes a label that names their pressure without agreeing to anything, then five questions that start with how or what and rest on your real constraint. No whys, no yes-or-no questions, no bluffs. It orders them from softest to the one you keep for "take it or leave it", writes the line to hold when they press for an answer now, and gives you the sentence to say when a question opens a door toward a…
You give it
- The offer or demand, with numbers and dates
- Why you cannot accept it, in plain words
- What you could accept (advised)
- Who they are and what they need from you (optional)
You get
- Their position and probable need
- A label and five how-or-what questions, ordered
- A holding line and the question for 'take it or leave it'
- The shape of a yes
Use it when
- A client wants the price cut or the deadline halved and you cannot do either.
- A supplier or landlord sends new terms and expects a yes by Friday.
- You tend to cave or to blow up, and want a third way ready before the call.
How to use it
- Copy the prompt, then paste it into Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini with the demand under it.
- Write the real constraint, even if it is just cash.
- Say the LABEL and the first question out loud before the call. Change any word that does not sound like you.
- Use the questions in order. Let the silence after each one do its work.
