What it does
When bad news arrives wrapped in soft words, people read the wrapping and distrust the rest. They want to know what was lost, how big it is and what happens next. A first line of thanks or hope makes them wait for the real news. This skill leads with the loss in one plain sentence. It gives every number it was given, bad and good, and credits what held. It leaves blame for later and says when it will be looked at. It states what you still have in figures, then lists every soft label in your draft and puts the plain word beside it. Finally it asks whether you would say the update to the person it hurts most. It ends on actions.
You give it
- The facts of the setback: what, when, the numbers
- Who the update is for and how they are affected
- What you are doing next
- A draft update (optional)
You get
- A short update that opens with the loss
- The numbers, bad and good, with gaps marked
- A list of soft labels swapped for plain words
- A close that names actions, who and by when
Use it when
- A project, launch or quarter has missed, and you must tell people today.
- You must tell customers about a delay, outage, recall or price rise.
- Your draft sounds like a press release and you want it to sound like a person.
