Careful coding rules
Add four habits to your AI coder. Get smaller, simpler changes that state their assumptions and prove they work.
Careful coding rules is a free AI skill for the job "Build and ship software". Give the instructions to an AI assistant that supports the required files and tools, then review its output.

What it does
Your AI coder makes smaller, simpler changes and shows its thinking before it writes. Add four habits, and the code you get back states its assumptions, does only what you asked, touches only what it must, and proves it works. The habits come from observations on common AI coding mistakes. Think before coding: name assumptions, offer options, ask when unsure. Keep it simple: no extras, no one-use abstractions, rewrite 200 lines that could be 50. Make surgical edits: change only the lines needed and clean up only your own mess. Set a goal you can check, then loop until it is met. They lean toward care over speed.
You give it
- The coding task you want done
- The existing code to change
- A test or check that shows success (optional)
- Codebase (optional)
You get
- Stated assumptions before any code
- The smallest change that solves the problem
- Edits limited to the lines that matter
- A clear way to check the result
Use it when
- Your AI assistant keeps adding features you did not ask for.
- A small fix came back as a big rewrite across many files.
- You want the model to ask questions instead of guessing.
- Code reviews take long because changes are bigger than the task.
How to use it
- Add it to your AI once: download it and add the folder to Claude, ChatGPT or Codex as a skill.
- Ask for the job in your own words. Your AI opens the skill when it fits.
