What it does
A small searchable store for your documents that finds passages by meaning instead of exact words. Ask a question and it brings back the closest text, ready to feed into a question-answering app. The setup uses Chroma, a free database that runs on your own computer. You split your text into pieces, turn them into number lists called embeddings, and save them with labels like source and date. A short set of functions then lets you add, search, filter and delete. You can narrow a search by label, mix word search with meaning search, and keep the store on disk or run it as a server. Python is needed, and it works well in a notebook for early prototypes.
You give it
- Your text or documents
- The labels to store with each piece
- Where to save the store
- A few test questions (optional)
You get
- A working Chroma store
- Code to add and query text
- Filters by label
- A test search that returns matching passages
Use it when
- You want a chatbot that answers from your own documents.
- Keyword search misses pages that use different wording.
- You need to filter results by author, date or source.
- You are prototyping on a laptop and do not want a paid hosted database.
How to use it
- Add it to your AI once: download it and add the folder to Claude, ChatGPT or Codex as a skill.
- Ask for the job in your own words. Your AI opens the skill when it fits.
- It works best when your AI can run Python code.
