What it does
Praise is cheap when it is vague. "Great to meet you, you were so inspiring" could be sent to anyone, and the person knows it. Flattery also tends to arrive with a request tucked behind it, which is why people mistrust praise. This skill writes appreciation that cannot be mistaken for flattery. It picks one thing the person said, made or did, and states the exact detail, which proves you were listening. It says what it did for you or others. It removes any adjective you cannot back with an example, and it keeps the request out. Where you do have a request, it tells you to send it separately, later. The note is short, in your voice, and fits the channel.
You give it
- Your notes on the person, such as a contact card
- The one thing you valued, in a sentence or two
- How you will send it: handwritten, email or message
- Your usual tone, if you want it matched (optional)
- Brand brain (optional)
You get
- A short note, 40 to 90 words, in your voice
- The detail it used and where it came from
- A list of what it cut and why
- A reminder to send any request separately
Use it when
- You just had a good meeting and want to say thank you in a way that lands.
- Someone on your team did something you want to recognise properly.
- A supplier or a helper went out of their way and you want them to know.
