Lab hardware designer
Describe a lab part, like a mount or chip mold. Get a parametric design and STEP, STL or DXF files.
Lab hardware designer is a free AI skill for the job "Build and ship software". Give the instructions to an AI assistant that supports the required files and tools, then review its output.

What it does
A lab part you can fabricate, built as code so you can change one number and rebuild. Describe the mount, chip mold, holder or fixture. The skill sorts it into a device family, such as microfluidics or optomechanics, and loads the matching standards, because the hard part is fitting equipment with fixed sizes. A holder 0.5 mm too wide will not fit the plate reader. It writes parametric Python with build123d, exports STEP as the master file plus STL or DXF, then checks the dimensions with numbers and a rendered picture before anything is made. You need Python and the build123d package installed, and you should only run model files you trust.
You give it
- What the part does and what it mates with
- Key dimensions or the vendor drawing
- Material and fabrication method
- An existing STEP file to modify (optional)
You get
- Parametric Python model
- STEP, STL or DXF files
- Dimension checks against the standard
- A preview image to inspect
Use it when
- You need a mount that fits your optical table's bolt pattern.
- You want a microfluidic chip mold with the right channel sizes.
- You need a plate holder that matches a vendor's published dimensions.
- You want to change one dimension on a part and get new files fast.
How to use it
- Add it to your AI once: download it and add the folder to Claude, ChatGPT or Codex as a skill.
- Ask for the job in your own words. Your AI opens the skill when it fits.
- It works best when your AI can run Python code and save files.
