What it does
A team that has not said how it will choose will decide each hard case from scratch, under pressure, and usually in favour of this quarter. A short list of promises, written in advance, tells your team and your owners what to expect and gives you something to be held to. This skill finds the forks where short and long pull apart. It writes a promise for each, and every promise must name its cost: if keeping it costs nothing, it is a slogan. It covers customers, time horizon, how you measure, failure and bold bets, cash and cost, people, and how you will explain your reasoning. It ends with a plain statement that this is your approach, not the only right one.
