What it does
Plans for a shop, clinic, school, office or app often start with a list of features. A list says what to build. It does not say who the place is for, or what would spoil it. Teams then drift toward whatever looks impressive, and the people with the least power in the place get forgotten. This skill writes a statement of intent in short lines. It starts with who the place serves, including the smallest and least served. It then states the feeling, the must-not list, rules for each part of the place, how people move through it and a long-term plan. It ends in the first person so one person owns it.
You give it
- What the place or service is, and where it will be
- Who will use it, and who works there
- Two or three things you already know you want or dislike (optional)
- Your plan for the first year and for later years (optional)
- Your question (optional)
You get
- Who it is for, with the least served named
- The feeling it should have, and a must-not list
- Rules for the building or screens, staff, displays, shop and grounds
- A renewal plan, a long-term plan and a first-person sign-off
Use it when
- You are about to design or rebuild a space, a service or a product and the team has no shared aim.
- A project keeps drifting toward looking impressive instead of serving people.
- You need a short statement that new staff and suppliers can follow.
