What it does
Pages built without a grid look arranged by luck. Elements sit a little off one another, type comes in six sizes and three faces, and the page has no clear order. Readers cannot say what to look at first, and every new page is a fresh set of decisions. This skill starts with what the page means and who reads it. It then sets margins, picks columns and modules to suit the content and the image shapes, and chooses one or two typefaces from a short classic list and one or two sizes. It uses large type against small type, and white space, to set order. It lays out every page in the series and marks changes that have no reason.
You give it
- Your content, or a list of what each page holds
- The page type and size, such as web, A4 or poster
- Your brand file or current look (optional)
- The image shapes you must fit (optional)
- Brand brain (optional)
- A draft (optional)
You get
- A grid: margins, columns and modules
- A short type list with one or two typefaces and one or two sizes
- A white-space plan
- A layout for every page in the series, with unneeded changes marked
Use it when
- You are laying out a report, site, menu, poster set or catalogue and want a system.
- Your pages look busy and nobody can say what to look at first.
- You need pages by several people to look like one set.
