What it does
Most overlong drafts are not bad. They hold several good ideas that argue with each other. A reader cannot tell which one to carry away, so they carry none. Cutting a bad sentence is easy. Cutting a good idea from the draft is where the work is. This skill starts by counting. It lists every idea, example and joke, and writes the main idea in one sentence. Each item then gets a score: it serves the main idea, it supports it, it competes with it, or it is unrelated. Competing and unrelated items go, even when they are good. Supporting items are cut to one example each. The ending is checked so that the best moment is the last thing the reader meets. Nothing new is added. You get the shorter draft and a ranked list of what to put back if you disagree.
You give it
- The draft
- The brief or the main idea, if you have it (optional)
- Your target length (optional)
- Any part you will not cut (optional)
- A buyer brief (optional)
You get
- The main idea in one sentence
- A numbered inventory of ideas, each scored
- The cut draft, with before and after word counts
- A cut list with the reason for each, and a parking list for ideas that belong elsewhere
Use it when
- A draft has grown and you cannot say what it is really about.
- Readers say it is good but long, or good but hard to follow.
- You are over the length limit and need to know what to lose first.
How to use it
- Start a chat with the skill. Open it if you added it to your AI, or copy it and paste it in.
- Paste the draft. Say the main idea if you know it, and name anything that must stay.
- Read the cut list. If you disagree with a cut, use the put-back order at the end.
- Send the cut draft on for a test with real readers.
