What it does
Asking a friend "what did you think?" gets you kind words from someone who wants you to feel good. A better test uses two kinds of people, asks them to do something before they give an opinion, and decides what counts as a pass before the answers arrive. This skill designs that test. It picks one expert and one newcomer (more if you can), tells you to keep them apart, and gives each the same setup with no explanation first. It lists what to watch without asking: where they lean in, laugh, look away or reread. The questions come straight after, before any discussion. The newcomer is asked to say the point in a sentence and to name what they remember. The expert is asked what they noticed that most people would miss and what felt borrowed. The pass lines are fixed first, so you cannot move them to suit…
You give it
- The draft
- Who counts as an expert and who counts as a newcomer for this piece
- Where and how it will be seen: read, heard or watched
- The main idea and the promise to each group, if you have them (optional)
- A buyer brief (optional)
You get
- Who to pick and how to keep the two groups apart
- A setup script with nothing explained in advance
- A watch list of what to note without asking
- Questions for each group, and a pass line for each
- A record sheet to fill in
Use it when
- You have a draft for a mixed audience and want proof it works for both groups.
- Feedback from friends has been warm and useless.
- You can show the piece to a few people this week and want to get the most from it.
