What it does
Most drafts are weaker than the thought behind them. The writer reaches for long words, stock phrases and passive lines, and the reader has to dig for who is doing what. The fixes are simple, but they are hard to see in your own work. This skill first writes the point of the piece in one sentence. It marks stale images, padded phrases, show-off words and empty words, and swaps each for a short one or cuts it. It turns passive lines into active ones, cuts adverbs and fancy speech tags, and finds long nouns that hide the actor. Every change is listed with its reason, so you keep control. The last step is to check you would say it aloud.
