What it does
A track record only helps if the business behind it stayed the same. A company that sold the same thing to the same buyers for ten years gives you something to lean on. One that kept changing course gives you a history of several different businesses. This skill checks which one you have. It compares what was sold in the first and last years, puts the swings in yearly profit into numbers, and counts each change of course: a new line of business, a big restructuring, a new strategy, a turnaround. It separates bad years caused by the whole industry from bad years caused by the company's own choices. Then it calls the record steady, mixed, changing or too young. It gives no buy or sell calls and marks every gap.
You give it
- What the business sells, to whom, and how the money comes in
- Sales and operating profit for as many years as you have
- News about big deals, new bosses or restructurings (optional)
- The stake or decision you are weighing (optional)
- Your question (optional)
You get
- A first-year and last-year comparison of what was sold
- The spread of results in numbers
- Each change of course, with its year
- Each bad year marked as the industry's or the company's own
- A call of steady, mixed, changing or too young, and what would change it
Use it when
- You are studying a business to own for years and want to know if its history is a fair guide.
- A company has a good record but a new boss or a new plan.
- You are comparing two businesses and one has changed course more than the other.
How to use it

- List any big deals, new bosses or plans you know of, with the year.
- Read the call, then check the flags it found against the company's own reports.
- Take the result to "Owner-minded management checker" or your own decision.
