What it does
A list of strengths is not an edge. A business has a lasting edge only if it earns something rivals do not, such as a higher price or a lower cost, and something stops rivals from taking it. Good execution, a fast team and a nice culture are real, but rivals can copy them. This skill makes you name the benefit in numbers and the barrier in words, then checks that it is large enough to show up in the results. It matches the edge to one of seven powers (scale, network effects, counter-positioning, switching costs, brand, cornered resource or process), checks which stage you are in, and tests whether you can explain how the business makes money in a few sentences. If you cannot, it marks the business too hard to judge and stops. No investment advice.
You give it
- A description of the business and how it makes money (required)
- Your price, cost and margin if you know them (optional, in the same message)
- Your main rivals and what they do (optional)
- The stage of the business, whether starting, growing or mature (optional)
- Competitors (optional)
You get
- The benefit named in numbers and the barrier in words
- A materiality test with a number or a clear reason
- A match to one of the seven powers, and the stage check
- The edge to build next and the evidence still missing
Use it when
- You think you have a moat but cannot say what stops a rival copying it.
- You are choosing which advantage to build next with limited time and money.
- You are judging whether a rival's edge is real before you decide how to respond.
How to use it
- Start a chat with the skill. Open it if you added it to your AI, or copy it and paste it in.
- Describe how the business makes money in a few sentences. Add price, cost and margin if you have them.
- Name your closest rivals and what stops them copying you, as you see it.
- Read the verdict, then the evidence list. Gather what is missing before you commit money.
- Re-run it every year or after a big change in your market.
Workflows that use it

- Find which of seven powers you hold or can build
- Size up an industry before you enter it
