What it does
Many businesses believe they have a moat and cannot say what stops a rival copying it. The advantage named is often execution, a good team or a big user count. None of those is a barrier on its own. This workflow runs four steps. The first tests your main advantage for a benefit in numbers and a barrier in words. The second sets the same two tests against all seven powers: scale, networks, counter-positioning, switching costs, brand, cornered resource and process. The third asks who could take the top power from you and how soon. The fourth finds your market stage and picks the one power you can still build, with a first test and a pass line. It rests on a third-party summary of a book on strategy, so its claims are kept modest. It gives no investment advice.
You give it
- What you sell, to whom, and your price, cost and margin
- Your main rivals and what they do
- How fast your market is growing, if you know (optional)
- Competitors (optional)
You get
- A test of your main advantage, with the benefit in numbers, the barrier in words and a size check
- A scorecard of all seven powers, sorted into held, buildable and out of reach
- A ten-year check on what could take your best power away
- The power to build first at your stage, a first test with a pass line, and the early choices that close the others
Use it when
- You think your business has a moat and want proof before you tell a backer or build on it.
- You can name one advantage and want to know if a stronger one is sitting unused.
- You are choosing between spending on brand, scale, a community or a better model, and want to know which one your market still allows.
Steps
- Business power tester: Describe your business and rivals. Get a test of whether your edge lasts and which of seven powers to build next.
- Seven powers scorecard builder: Paste your business facts. Get seven powers scored on benefit and barrier, sorted into held, buildable or out of reach.
- Ten-year durability checker: Paste your business and its edge. Get how much value sits past year five and what could end the edge.
- Power build-order planner: Paste your power test and market facts. Get your stage, the powers still open and a first test.
How to use it
- Download the handoff pack. It's a zip with HANDOFF.md and every skill file this workflow uses.
- Give the folder to Claude (in Claude Code, or as files in a Claude Project) and say "Follow HANDOFF.md".
- Describe your business and paste any numbers on price, cost, margin and repeat rate. It works step by step and saves each result.
- Read the buildable list and the first test last. Run the test before you spend on the power.
