What it does
Fiction goes wrong in ordinary ways. The tale goes nowhere, the people have no reason to be there, the talk sounds like no one, or the narrator says one thing about a character and the character does another. Writers miss these in their own work because they know what they meant. This skill checks a draft against a list of rules for plain, honest fiction. They cover purpose, episodes that earn their place, living people with a reason to be present, believable talk that stops when the speakers run out of things to say, characters who match how they are described, one voice per person, the right word and no surplus words. Each rule gets a pass or fail, the offending line is quoted, and the score says how many of the rules that apply were met.
You give it
- The story or scene, pasted in full
- The kind of story (realistic, fantasy, humour) (optional)
- What the story is meant to do (optional)
You get
- A pass or fail on each rule that applies, with the line quoted
- A list of surplus words and voice breaks
- A score out of 100, with how it was worked out
- A fix for each fail, with plot changes marked
Use it when
- You finished a draft and want a plain check before sending it out.
- You can feel something is off in your dialogue but cannot say what.
- You edit other people's stories and want a consistent list to check against.
How to use it
- Start a chat with the skill. Open it if you added it to your AI, or copy it and paste it in.
- Paste the story as text.
- Say what kind of story it is, so rules that do not fit can be skipped.
- Work through the fails, starting with purpose and people.
- Run it again on the fixed draft and compare the score.
