What it does
Most writers do not know what their story is about until they have written it. If they start with a message, the story turns into a lecture. If they never ask, the draft feels busy and does not stay with the reader. The better order is story first, then meaning. This skill works backward from the draft. It lists the objects, images, words and moments that keep coming back, because those are where your mind has been working without you. It writes three readings of what the story is about, each as a tension and not a moral, and picks the one with the most evidence. Then it lists the few scenes to add or sharpen so that reading shows, and the scenes that pull another way. The reader should take away resonance, not a lesson.
You give it
- Your draft
- The recurring list from the cold re-read marker (optional)
- What you think it is about, if you have a guess (optional)
- What drew you to write it (optional)
- Audit report (optional)
You get
- A count of what recurs, by page
- Three readings of what it is about, with evidence
- The best-supported reading as a tension
- Scenes to add or sharpen, and scenes that pull another way
Use it when
- Your first draft is done and you do not know what to fix first.
- Readers say it was fine but not memorable.
- You suspect there is a bigger idea in the draft you have not named.
How to use it
- Start a chat with the skill. Open it if you added it to your AI, or copy it and paste it in.
- Paste the finished draft. If it has rested, say how long.
- Add your own guess about the meaning. It tests it against the draft.
- Read the pick. If it feels wrong, ask for the next best.
- Use the list in the second draft.
