What it does
Many drafts fail in a way that is hard to see. Nothing is wrong line by line, but the whole stays level, or the reader cannot tell whether the news is good or bad. The story has no shape. This skill treats a story as a line. The horizontal axis is time from start to end. The vertical axis is the main character's fortune, from ill at the bottom to good at the top. It scores each beat, draws the line in text and names the shape, such as a man in a hole, boy meets girl, Cinderella, a sinking line or a flat line. It flags flat stretches and any beat where the reader cannot tell good from bad, then suggests one change and redraws the line so you can see the effect.
