What it does
An about-me story usually fails in one of two ways. It lists dates with no shape, or it dresses the facts up until they are not quite true. Readers feel both and skip it. The steps keep the facts true and give them a shape. First it lists what happened in time order, then marks the call, the point of no return, the hardest stretch, the change and what you brought back for others. It drafts the story without inventing anything. Next it scores each beat from good to bad fortune and draws the line, so you can see where it goes flat. You pause to make the one fix it suggests. Then it cuts the draft by a tenth, with a log of every cut and why. Last it puts the result in plain words and checks you would say it aloud.
You give it
- The true facts, what happened, in what order, with rough dates
- What it cost you and what you gave up
- What you learned or became, and who gains from it
- Who will read or hear it, and how long it should be
- Your brand file or voice notes (optional)
- Brand brain (optional)
You get
- The story mapped as a call, a point of no return, a hardest stretch, a change and a return
- A draft that uses only the facts you gave
- A line of the story's ups and downs, its shape and the flat spots
- A version cut by a tenth, with a log of every cut, then a plain-words edit
Use it when
- You need an About page, an intro or a talk opener about how you started.
- Your story is a list of dates and does not move.
- Your draft is long, and you cannot tell what to cut.
Steps
- Hero story mapper: Paste the facts of a founder, project or life change. Get it mapped as a call, threshold, trial, change and return.
- Story shape mapper: Paste your story, talk or pitch. Get its fortune line drawn in text, the flat spots, and a fix.
- Draft shortening editor: Paste your draft. Get it cut to 90% of its length, with a log of every cut and a story check.
- Plain English editor: Paste a draft. Get it back in plain words, with each cut explained and a check that you would still say it.
How to use it
- Download the handoff pack. It's a zip with HANDOFF.md and every skill file this workflow uses.
- Give the folder to Claude (in Claude Code, or as files in a Claude Project) and say "Follow HANDOFF.md".
- Give it facts only. It will not add scenes, quotes or numbers you did not provide.
- At the pause, make the one change the shape check suggests and fix the flat spots yourself. Then hand the draft back.
