What it does
When something does far better or worse than expected, the usual explanation is a story that fits. A better method is to guess the cause, then check it from both ends: what must be true if this is the cause, and what the facts rule out. This skill first rules things out with facts. It then checks four patterns that explain most extreme results: one or two things pushed to an extreme, many factors adding up past a tipping point, steady excellence on many fronts kept in line by good systems, and a big wave that the thing rode. It ranks the causes and gives the cheapest test that separates the top two.
