What it does
A written reason for every line in your month-end numbers that moved more than it should. You supply this period, last period and budget. The skill flags a line when its change passes your materiality rule, which defaults to 5 percent or a fixed floor, whichever is larger. Revenue, headcount cost and cash are always checked. For each flagged line it shows the three values, the change against prior and against budget, and a one sentence driver drawn from the activity behind the number, like a vendor, a volume change or a hire. If the cause is not in the data, it writes driver unclear and flags it for the controller instead of guessing.
You give it
- Current period actuals
- Prior period actuals
- Budget for the same lines
- Your materiality threshold (optional)
You get
- A commentary table for flagged lines
- Changes against prior and budget
- A one sentence driver for each line
- A short summary of the biggest movers
Use it when
- Month-end close is due and you have 80 lines to explain.
- Your CFO asks why costs jumped and you only have the totals.
- You need budget variance notes in the board package.
- You want a consistent threshold for what needs a comment.
