What it does

When a task is too hard for English learners, the usual fix is to simplify the thinking. The task gets easier, the students think less and the gap grows. The real problem is often the language around the thinking: long sentences, subject words, questions with hidden steps. The steps separate the two. First it writes a task that asks for real thinking in your subject. Then it reads the task for the words and sentence types that may block a learner of English, and separates those from the thinking itself. Last it adds word banks, sentence starters or visuals aimed at those blocks, with lighter help for stronger learners.

Steps

  1. Critical thinking task writer: Name a subject and a skill. Get a task where learners weigh evidence, spot bias or test an argument.
  2. Task language demand checker: Paste a task or text. Get the words and sentence types that may block students still learning English.
  3. English learner task support planner: Give it a task. Get a version with language help added that keeps the thinking just as hard.

How to use it

  1. Download the handoff pack. It is a zip with HANDOFF.md and every skill file this workflow uses.
  2. Give the folder to Claude (in Claude Code, or as files in a Claude Project) and say "Follow HANDOFF.md".
  3. Name the subject, the thinking skill and the age group. Add your learners' English levels if you know them.
  4. Read the task first and change it to fit your class before the language steps run on it.
  5. Try the supported version with one small group, then change the help that did not land.
