What it does
A headline has two jobs: to pick out the right reader and to promise them something worth reading on for. Many headlines do neither. They sound clever, but a stranger cannot tell who they are for or what they get. This prompt checks both jobs and scores them. It then reads the line on its own and asks what a stranger would gain by reading on. It marks the reward as a gain or a loss avoided and writes a version for each side. It only adds speed, ease or cost if your facts say so, so no fact is invented in the rewrite.
You give it
- The headline
- Offer facts such as price, speed and terms (optional)
- Who it is for (optional)
- Your offer (optional)
You get
- A score out of 100, with the sums
- Who it picks out and what it promises
- A pass or fail on the so-what test
- Stronger versions with the fact behind each
Use it when
- You have a headline you are not sure about.
- You have several headlines and need to rank them.
