What it does
A new hire's first week is often a laptop that is not ready, four hours of forms and a vague "settle in". By Friday they have met nobody who matters and done nothing real. The good first week is the opposite: people and the problem on day one, tools on day two, and a small useful task finished by Friday. This prompt sets the Friday outcome, lists what must happen before day one with an owner for each item, and plans each half day with one purpose. It names each meeting with its length and the one question the hire should leave with, including hearing from a customer. It picks the real task or proposes one, says what done looks like and who checks it, and ends the week with a 30-minute look back using three questions you can act on.
You give it
- The role and the problem it solves
- Who they report to and work with
- The tools and accounts they need
- One small real task with a clear done (advised)
You get
- The Friday outcome and the before-day-one list with owners
- Five days planned by half day, with meetings and questions
- The real task with its done line, and the check-ins
Use it when
- Someone starts on Monday and you have not planned past the welcome coffee.
- Your last hire said the first week was confusing.
- You are the only manager and want a plan you can hand to a colleague to run.
How to use it
- Copy the prompt, then paste it into Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini with the role and team under it.
- Add the tools and a real task if you have one.
- Do the BEFORE DAY ONE list this week.
- Share the plan with the hire on day one, and run the day 5 look back.
