What it does
Most people walk into a first meeting with their own pitch ready and nothing prepared about the other person. The talk then circles around what you want, and the person leaves with no sense of being seen. This skill prepares the other half. It gathers public facts about what the person does and cares about, and keeps the source of each. It finds what they come back to again and again, which is usually what they treasure. It notes the people who stand near them, such as an assistant or a team lead, who deserve the same care. It picks two honest things to admire, finds real common ground, and writes the one question only they can answer. It also sets the size of your ask, so you ask for advice before you ask for a favour.
You give it
- The person's name and role
- Why you are meeting and what you hope for
- Links or text about them, such as a profile, talks or posts (optional)
- What you have in common, if you know (optional)
You get
- What they care about, ranked, with sources
- The people around them and how to greet them
- Two honest things to admire
- The common ground, and one question only they can answer
Use it when
