What it does
Cost of goods sold, or COGS, is what it cost to get the product to the point where it sits ready to sell. Stores often get this wrong in both directions. Freight and duty on stock coming in are left out, or shipping to the customer and ad spend are put in. Gross margin then looks better or worse than it is, and every decision made from it is off. This skill uses one rule: any cost paid to get the product ready to sell is COGS, and costs after the sale are expenses. It tests each line against that rule, splits mixed invoices such as retail boxes and shipping cartons, and asks when your setup decides the answer, such as free shipping or dropshipping. It shows gross margin before and after, and a score for how many lines you had in the right place. It is a draft to…
You give it
- A list of cost lines from invoices, your ledger or a profit and loss export
- How you sell: own stock, dropship, 3PL or Amazon FBA
- Whether shipping is charged to customers or built into the price
- Revenue for the period, if you want gross margin worked out (optional)
- Which view you want: accounting or contribution margin (optional)
- Your question (optional)
You get
- A table of each line, its bucket, the rule used and a confidence mark
- The lines in the wrong place and what to do about each
- Gross margin before and after the fixes
- Questions where the rule depends on your setup, and a score out of 100
Use it when
- Your gross margin looks too good or too bad and you suspect costs are in the wrong place.
- You are building a profit and loss statement and need cost lines sorted.
- A new accountant or bookkeeper asks how you classify freight, packaging and fees.
