What it does
A checklist is only as good as the mistakes it is built from. Most people remember outcomes, not how they decided. A good call can end badly and a sloppy call can end well, so the result alone teaches the wrong thing. This skill sorts each case by process and outcome, keeps only the cases where the process was weak, and names the cause with plain labels such as rushed, reward-bent advice or sticking with an old choice. It adds cases from other people, which cost you nothing. You get a log that shows which causes repeat, and for each case the one question that would have caught it.
You give it
- The kind of decision you keep making
- Three to six past cases of your own, with what you chose and what happened
- Three cases from others in the same field (optional)
You get
- Each case sorted: bad process, bad luck, lucky win or good call
- A cause named for each real mistake
- The causes that repeat, with a count
- For each case, the question that would have caught it
Use it when
- You keep repeating the same kind of mistake.
- You are about to build a checklist and need to know what goes on it.
- A bad result has you asking whether you decided badly or were unlucky.
