What it does
Most operator bugs live in the reconcile loop, not in Kubernetes. This skill builds a custom operator and checks it against seven common mistakes. They are: step-by-step logic, no retry on short errors, missing finalizers, editing spec instead of status, skipping the status subresource, blocking calls and no leader election. You name the resource you want to manage. The skill designs the custom resource, picks a tool such as kubebuilder, operator-sdk or Kopf, and writes the controller. Three Python tools then check the CRD, lint the reconcile code and score the operator on five OperatorHub levels. You need Python and a Kubernetes dev setup.
You give it
- The resource the operator should manage
- Your language and framework preference (optional)
- Existing CRD or controller code (optional)
- Cluster and RBAC constraints
You get
- A custom resource design
- Controller code with a safe reconcile loop
- CRD and reconcile lint results
- A capability level score with gaps to close
Use it when
- You want Kubernetes to manage a database, queue or internal service for you.
- You inherited an operator that loops forever or leaves orphaned resources.
- You are choosing between kubebuilder, operator-sdk and Kopf.
- You need to review a CRD for status, conditions and finalizer mistakes.
How to use it
- Add it to your AI once: download it and add the folder to Claude, ChatGPT or Codex as a skill.
- Ask for the job in your own words. Your AI opens the skill when it fits.
- It works best when your AI can run code and read your project files.
