What it does
Nobody can say what a company is exactly worth. You do not need to. You need to know if the price is well under a sensible range, well over it, or in the fog between. In the fog, the purchase depends on one estimate being right, and that is a bet. This workflow follows the method in the 1940 edition of Security Analysis by Benjamin Graham and David Dodd. It values the shares from normal earnings with a ceiling on the multiple, builds a floor from the balance sheet with stated markdowns, and then sets the price against both. It asks why the price might be wrong and whether the cause is neglect or real decline. It is a method of analysis, not financial advice. It never says buy or sell and names no price to pay.
You give it
- The purchase and the price, in a sentence or two
- Normal earnings per share as a range (the result of "Find a company's real earning power and its tricks")
- The latest balance sheet with the notes
- The share count, and the bond yield today (optional)
You get
- A first label of investment or speculation
- A low, middle and high value from earnings, and how much of the price is hope
- An asset floor of book value, net current assets and sale values, with a cash strength rating
- A verdict of margin of safety present, no clear margin, or price above value
Use it when
- You are thinking of buying shares or a small business and want to compare price with value.
- A share price looks cheap, or very high, and you want to know how much rests on hope.
- You want to write down your reasons before you commit money.
Steps
- Investment or speculation sorter: Paste a purchase you are weighing and why. Get it sorted as investment or speculation, with the questions a careful buyer asks.
- Earnings value range builder: Paste normal earnings and the share price. Get a low, middle and high value and how much of the price is hope.
- Business asset value estimator: Paste a balance sheet and share price. Get book value, net current assets, sale value and a cash strength rating.
- Investment margin of safety review: Paste your value range, asset floor and the price. Get whether there is a real margin of safety and what removes it.
How to use it
- Download the handoff pack. It's a zip with HANDOFF.md and every skill file this workflow uses.
- Give the folder to Claude (in Claude Code, or as files in a Claude Project) and say "Follow HANDOFF.md".
- Paste the earnings range, the balance sheet and the price. It works step by step and saves each result.
- Read the verdict first, then the range and the floor behind it.
