What it does
Most job descriptions are a wish list of skills copied from the last one. The people who could solve your problem skim past them, and the people who apply match the keywords. Patty McCord has said in public that the better question is what problem this person will solve, and what will be true if they solve it. This prompt puts that problem in the first paragraph, with the evidence you gave. It writes three to five lines you could check in six months, describes the right person by what they have done before rather than years or degrees, and lists only the skills the problem needs, each marked must or helps. It adds how the work happens, from pay to tools, and asks applicants for one short note on a similar problem they fixed instead of a cover letter.
You give it
- The problem and how you know it is a problem
- What done looks like in six months
- Who they work with and what tools they use (advised)
- Pay range, place and hours (advised)
You get
- A plain title and a problem-first opening
- A checkable six-month picture
- The person described by past situations, and only the needed skills
- How the work happens and how to apply
Use it when
- You are hiring for the first time and the role is really a problem with a name.
- The last posting brought fifty applicants who could not do the job.
- You want the right person to recognise themselves in the first paragraph.
How to use it
- Copy the prompt, then paste it into Claude, ChatGPT or Gemini with your problem under it.
- Add what will be true in six months and the practical facts.
- Read THE PROBLEM aloud. If a good candidate would not recognise it, sharpen your input and run again.
- Check local posting rules, then post it.
