What it does
A long mission statement is rarely read and almost never remembered. A mantra is a short phrase, two to four words, that says why the work exists in terms people can repeat. It is for the team first: it tells them what to do when a choice is unclear. This skill starts with the benefit you give, not the product you make, and asks what meaning the work makes. It writes three mantras, drops vague words such as "excellence" or "solutions", and tests each against the long statement. It then places the idea on a grid of value against uniqueness and picks the one in the valuable and unique corner. Last, it tests the pick on three people who can repeat it back.
You give it
- What you do, in a few lines (required)
- Who it is for (required)
- Your current mission statement (optional)
- What your customers say you give them (optional)
You get
- The benefit you give, in a sentence
- Three mantras, two to four words each
- A value-and-uniqueness grid check for each
- A pick, and a plan to test it on three people
Use it when
- Your mission statement is a paragraph nobody can recall.
- Your team keeps debating what to say yes and no to, and needs a short shared reference.
- You are starting a business and want a short line that says what it is for.
