What it does
Sales, clicks and conversion rates are easy to count, so teams watch them. They tell you how many bought. They do not tell you if the job got done. This skill sorts what you track by what it describes: your product, a customer type, your costs, a rival or the customer's progress. It checks each number against three traps. The number is loud because the system produces it. It rewards selling more to the same people. Or it was chosen because it confirms what the team already thinks. Then it writes three to five measures of progress taken from the promises in your job spec, including one for repeat use, and checks each for ways to game it.
You give it
- The numbers and reports you track now
- A job spec (optional but best)
- How data is collected today (optional)
- A buyer brief (optional)
You get
- Each number tagged and checked against three data traps
- Three to five measures of customer progress, each with formula, source and owner
- A repeat-use measure
- A gaming check and a guard for each measure
- A list of numbers to stop reviewing every week
Use it when
- Your reports are full of figures and nobody can say if customers got what they came for.
- You count purchases or sign-ups and cannot tell if people use the thing.
- Teams hit their numbers and customers still complain.
