What it does
Before most talks you have already picked a stance without noticing. You might push to win, give in to keep the peace, or hold back what you want. Each has a cost later, especially if you will deal with this person again. This skill names six stances: win-win, win-lose, lose-win, lose-lose, win, and win-win or no deal. It says which fits you and the other side, and quotes the evidence. It rates your courage and your consideration, since high courage with low consideration leads to win-lose and the reverse leads to giving in. It writes what a win is for each side, marks the other side's list as a guess, and sets your no-deal line. That line is the point where you would rather walk away, and having it lets you listen without fear.
You give it
- The deal or dispute, with who, what each wants and what is at stake
- How often you will deal with them again (optional)
- What you do instead if there is no deal (optional)
- Anything the other side has said, in their own words (optional)
You get
- The stance each side is likely to take, with evidence
- Your courage and consideration scores, each with one action
- A list of wins for you, and a marked guess at wins for them
- Your no-deal line and how to say it, plus a brief for the talk
Use it when
- You are about to negotiate with a client, partner, boss or supplier you will deal with again.
- A family or business dispute keeps going in circles.
- You tend to give in, or to push too hard, and want a plan that does neither.
