What it does
Cheap stocks are cheap for a reason, and most reasons are good ones. The skill is in telling the few that are only neglected from the many that are in trouble. And no single bargain is certain, so the method has to be judged on a group. This workflow follows the enterprising investor's method in The Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham. A first cut on a low price against recent earnings is followed by five tests: current assets at one and a half times current liabilities with debt no more than net current assets, no loss in five years, a dividend now, earnings above those of a few years back, and a price no more than 120% of tangible assets. Survivors get an asset floor, and the gap to the price is judged. Then you set the group size, the caps, the exit and a scorecard before you buy anything.…
You give it
- A table of listed companies with price, recent earnings and the balance sheet figures
- Five years of profit and the dividend for each company
- The money you would put in the group
- Your trading costs and tax rate, if you know them
You get
- A short list that passes five tests, with the failed test beside every cut
- An asset floor for each survivor, set beside the price
- A margin of safety verdict for each one
- Group size, caps, an exit rule and a scorecard fixed before you buy
Use it when
- You have time to study companies and want to look for stocks priced under their worth.
- You want a repeatable first cut instead of following tips.
- You want to know if the research you do beats a plain fund.
Steps
- Undervalued stock screener: Paste a table of listed companies. Get the cheap ones that pass five safety tests, with the failed test beside every cut.
- Business asset value estimator: Paste a balance sheet and share price. Get book value, net current assets, sale value and a cash strength rating.
- Investment margin of safety review: Paste your value range, asset floor and the price. Get whether there is a real margin of safety and what removes it.
- Bargain investment portfolio planner: Paste your bargain candidates. Get group size, caps, an exit rule and a scorecard that judges the method, not one stock.
